WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to the news that Justice Stephen Breyer, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, plans to retire, Stacey Stevenson, CEO of Family Equality, released the following statement

“As a champion of liberty and equality, Associate Justice Breyer will leave behind a distinguished legacy as a consensus builder and vocal defender of the civil rights of every person under the Constitution—including the rights of LGBTQ+ people and families and women. Today, Family Equality unequivocally celebrates his commitment to securing the rights of our families.

We recognize that with his retirement, the Biden Administration has an opportunity to create a Court that better reflects our families and nation. The President has already committed to appointing the first Black woman to the Supreme Court. As such, we are calling upon the President to fulfill this historic commitment by swiftly selecting a nominee with a demonstrated commitment to equal justice under the law who represents the incredible diversity of our country.”
