The world welcomed the birth of Beyonce and Jay-Z's daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, on the last day of 2011. Nine days later we learned that this very public couple had kept a very private secret - the loss of an earlier pregnancy. Rapper Jay-Z's latest release, "Glory", celebrates his baby girl's birth but also acknowledges the pain of an earlier miscarriage.
This power couple are not the only celebrities to have gone through the all-too-common loss of miscarriage. Also included in their ranks are Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and, just as poignantly, a multitue of just-you-and-me's. According to Path2Parenthood, 25% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, most typically in the first trimester. Thankfully, most women who experience miscarriage will go on to carry a pregnancy successfully to term. Knowing this however, does not diminish the anguish one might feel when the pain of a loss is still fresh.
In the words of Jay-Z, "Last time the miscarriage was so tragic/We was afraid you disappear/But nah baby you magic."
My dear girl. If you have gone through a miscarriayage and need a little help being magic, click here.
