She is the author or co-author of six books on reproductive medicine as well as articles that have appeared in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Conceive Magazine, Family Building, and other publications. Her books are: Without Child: Experiencing and Resolving Infertility (1988, co-authored with Dr. Susan Cooper), The Long Awaited Stork: A Guide to Parenting After Infertility (1990, revised 1998), Beyond Infertility: New Paths to Parenthood (1994, co-authored with Dr. Susan Cooper), Experiencing Infertility: Stories to Inform and Inspire (1998), Choosing Assisted Reproduction: Social, Emotional, and Ethical Considerations (1998), and most recently Having Your Baby Through Egg Donation (2005, co-authored with Evelina Sterling). This last publication was included among Library Journalâs outstanding consumer health books of 2005. A second and international edition will be published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers in the UK in 2013.  Ellen maintains a private practice in Newton, Massachusetts, where she specializes in helping people with decisions regarding assisted reproduction, donor conception and adoption. She is a graduate of Simmons College, B.A., Northeastern University, M Ed. and Boston University School of Social Work, MSW.

Biography

Ellen Speyer has been working with the Path2Parenthood as a West coast support services co-chair since the inception of the association. Presently, Ellen contributes as a member of the Path2Parenthood Mental Health Advisory Council.  As an active member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s Mental Health Professional Group, Ellen has been the Chair and Co-Chair of the Education Committee and a member of the Gestational Surrogacy Guidelines task force.

Ellen Speyer received her Masters of Science Degree in Education from Queens College in New York and her Masters of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Pepperdine University in California.  Ellen has worked as a Board Certified, Marriage Family Therapist in private practice since 1985. The specialty of her practice is reproductive health issues, including infertility, pregnancy loss, adoption, surrogacy and third party reproduction. Ellen has worked as a therapist for surrogate mothers as an individual and group counselor for eighteen years.

Most clients using Ellen come to her Orange County California office. If they are not available to do so, arrangements are made to videoconference consultations; thus, Ellen works with many domestic and international clients.

She continues her professional growth in the field of infertility through awareness of evidence-based research and her involvement as a professional member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) Mental Health Professional Group (MHPG), Fertile Hope, Pacific Coast Reproductive Society and Resolve. Ellen was a member of the Donor Recipient Family Task Force, ASRM MHPG and was instrumental in setting up the Professionally led Support Groups for Resolve of Orange County. She is also a founding member and past Board Member of the Ovarian Cancer Orange County Alliance.
